SEL activities for Martial Arts and Self Defense
12 Physical Education activities you can teach during a Martial Arts and Self Defense unit. Each one builds one Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) skill in about 20 minutes, inside the movement you already teach.
PE Course 1
- Finding the Beat Together Social awareness · Week 13In a mirror dance, partners take turns leading and following an eight count pattern and journal what it took to stay in sync.
- Feedback in Rhythm Relationship skills · Week 16Partners watch each other's dance sequence and trade one specific strength and one kind suggestion, then try the sequence again.
- Brave Enough to Perform Self-management · Week 17Small groups perform their sequence for a supportive audience and journal how they managed nerves before, during, and after.
- Learning a Skill on My Own Self-management · Week 20Using step by step task cards, students teach themselves a new jump rope trick and journal the strategies they used when they got stuck.
- Spotting and Consent Relationship skills · Week 31Before any partner assisted stretch, students practice asking permission, explaining what they will do, and stopping when a partner says stop.
PE Course 2
- Harder Than It Looks Self-awareness · Week 6Students predict how long they can hold their arms straight out, test it, and compare the prediction with what their body tells them.
- Balance Under Pressure Self-awareness · Week 8Students hold balances of increasing difficulty and notice how wobbles in the body match wobbles in focus or emotion.
- Respect Before Contact Relationship skills · Week 25Before basic self-defense movement patterns, partners practice a respect routine and a clear signal system for stopping.
- Leverage and Self Control Self-management · Week 26Students explore leverage and balance in controlled partner drills and reflect on using strength with control rather than force.
- Staying Calm When Pressed Self-management · Week 27During light pressure drills, students practice steady breathing and journal how calm thinking changes their reaction.
- Knowing My Limits Self-awareness · Week 28Partners practice the tap and release signal and journal about recognizing their own limits and respecting a partner's.
- Strength Without Harm Responsible decision-making · Week 29Students practice self-defense escapes and discuss when physical skill should be used only to stay safe and never to harm.
Some activities are set in this sport. Others work in it with no changes, like a calm breathing reset or a self officiating routine.
